Dubai welcomed 7.28 million international overnight visitors last year, representing 32 per cent year-over-year growth on the figure for 2020.
In contrast, the number of international guests the emirate welcomed in 2019 wasn't nearly as high as it was before the Covid-19 pandemic.
In spite of this, the city experienced a very successful year last year, setting it up for sustainable growth in the coming years.
The Dubai Department of Economy & Tourism (DET) reports that international visitor numbers in Dubai have surpassed 3.4 million visitors in the fourth quarter of 2021, surpassing 74% of pre-pandemic levels of fourth quarter 2019. This bodes well for Dubai's hotels in the fourth quarter to surpass pre-pandemic levels.
"This achievement also shows that we are on our way to becoming the world's best city for living and working," commented DET director general Helal Saeed Al Marri.
“Dubai continuously set precedents in the global tourism recovery, demonstrating how to open up to international visitors safely but effectively, and, most importantly, stay open
In addition to UAE Golden Jubilee celebrations and Expo 2020 Dubai opening, Dubai's well-coordinated, consistent, proactive, and creative approach laid the groundwork for a rapid recovery.
The success of Dubai in 2021 is a testament to the well-calibrated strategy and decisive measures that were put in place from the beginning to counter and manage the pandemic across all sectors, including tourism and trade.
Through meticulously following the highest standards of hygiene and safety, supported by diligence and cooperation from all stakeholders, Dubai has been able to reinforce the trust UAE residents place in the city as one of the safest in the world and allow international travellers to enjoy the attractions of the destination in a relaxed atmosphere.
The momentum we've now gathered will accelerate even further as we move forward into 2022, enabling us to continue to attract not just tourists to Dubai, but investors, entrepreneurs, and innovators as well, letting them experience and avail themselves of all that our multifaceted city has to offer."
Strong tourism arrivals from regional markets boosted international visitation.
A combined 26 percent of Dubai's total volume came from MENA and GCC markets, reinforcing Dubai's continued appeal to travelers from proximity markets.
In 2021, 22 percent of total visitors were from Western Europe, led by the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands.
Among international visitors, South Asia accounted for 18%, with Russia, CIS, and eastern Europe accounting for 15%.
